History of Farmers’ Markets in NZ...
Farmers Markets began in the late 90's with the establishment of a growers Market in Whangārei. Responding to increasing pressure in Wholesale prices Robert Bradley and Murray Burns set up the Whangārei Growers Market in 1998.
The philosophy of the Market was based on these principles.
- The Market was a place where consumers could buy direct from the growers.
- The Market was operated in a way that was transparent to the consumer.
- The Market was only for growers in Northland displaying Local Produce from Local Growers.
By early 2000 most cities and towns had a Farmers Market. People would travel to source the freshest ingredients, direct from the grower, in a place where people could socialise, enjoy a coffee a sample the amazing produce growers and producers had to offer.
This led to the establishment of a governing body and in 2006 Famers Markets NZ was set up to authenticate the produce being sold in Farmers Markets as Local.
This was a different approach to supermarkets who didn't care where they sourced their products, they preferred to sell quantity overquality at cheaper prices.
To help ensure that consumers can trust their local Farmers' Market and to protect the identity of Authentic Farmers' Markets across NewZealand, Farmers' Markets New Zealand (FMNZ) developed authentication guidelines.
- An Authentic Farmers' Market is defined as one which consists of an average of at least 70% Certified Local Stall holders and is governed by the accepted FMNZ definition of a Farmers' Market.
- It is primarily a food only market, a market where the vendors must be the principal producers (or someone directly involvedin the production process), and the food sold is produced in a defined local region.
